| A temporary aquatics venue was constructed in Long Beach to host the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials, women’s/men’s pre-Olympic water polo tournaments and an invitational swim meet. The planning and design was in response to its urban environment and can be viewed in context of the existing downtown buildings and roadways. The facility visually draws pedestrians to the venue through existing circulation systems supporting local hotels and restaurants.
The $5,000,000 venue included 10,000 temporary seats, two 50-meter temporary stainless steel above ground pools, tents and trailers erected in an existing parking lot adjacent to the Sports Arena and Convention Center and was visited by 115,000 spectators and supported by 2,000 volunteers.
The plan separates the user zones and circulation patterns for security and accreditation purposes. The exposed structural system was enhanced by graphics, flags and banners, defining entry points, functions and adding to the festive atmosphere of the venue.
