| The Sinclair Pavilion is intended to provide a relaxed alternative setting for students on a break from their classes in Art Center's landmark facility designed by Craig Elwood. Situated at the confluence of student parking and a series of ramps which descend to the campus, the design of the pavilion exploits the ramp to offer students a multi-level environment in which they can sip a cappuccino, visit with friends, or enjoy a lecture or film in a sheltered amphitheater.
Constructed of robust materials, with "agricultural" welds and a hot-dipped steel frame, the pavilion attempts to redress the digital design environment by adhering to an analogue design agenda characterized by large-scale moving parts such as a hand-cranked 15X25 foot window, and a pivoting Lamborghini-style canopy which gives access to the cafe.
Oriented to take advantage of views, the building is open to nature, with natural ventilation and light. |
